Product Description

Limited edition prints are printed on demand. Please allow up to two weeks for delivery.

This limited edition Giclee print is a high quality reproduction of an oil painting showing a hen harrier, or Skydancer, as they are sometimes called, gliding over the fells on the western edge of the Forest of Bowland.

£16 from the sale of each print will be donated to Birders Against Wildlife Crime (BAWC), a campaign group set up by volunteers to tackle wildlife crime in the UK, including the illegal persecution of raptors including the hen harrier. This money will be used to increase the awareness of the plight of the Hen Harrier. You can read about BAWC’s hen harrier campaign here, and more about the inspiration behind this painting below.

These prints are generated from a high resolution digital scan and are printed on 310 gsm fine art paper. The Giclee printing process provides better colour accuracy than other means of reproduction and archival quality inks ensure that the prints will not fade over time.

It is mounted and ready to frame. Including the mount it measures 51 x 38 cm (20 x 15″).

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Hen harriers are now all but extinct in England due largely to persecution on grouse moors. Hen harriers love to eat grouse, so are shot by gamekeepers protecting grouse for the shooting season. The Forest of Bowland used to be a stronghold of the hen harrier, but in recent years their numbers have plummeted – from 15 pairs in 2005 to effective extinction by 2015.

Despite living on the edge of the Bowland Fells, the closest I have ever come to seeing a hen harrier is on the Forest of Bowland road signs, a fact which deeply saddens me. Perhaps it is therefore somewhat ‘cheating’ to paint one. Nonetheless, I hope very much that this painting is mis-named and that one day I might see a live Skydancer gliding above the moorland. I painted The Last Skydancer in memory of Hope and Sky, two of the young hen harriers who went missing in autumn 2014.
