This small original oil painting shows barnacle geese in the late afternoon winter sunlight. I painted it after a day spent sketching at Caerlaverock on the Solway Firth in South West Scotland. Caerlaverock hosts an astonishing 12,000 barnacle geese each year as they overwinter here, having flown from Spitzbergen in the Norwegian Arctic. Watching them at Caerlaverock is really a wonderful spectacle, the main problem as an artist is where to begin..
