The autumn colours were just beginning to look really spectacular in Speyside two weeks ago. I particularly love the birches with their striped trunks and yellow leaves, and the twisty Scots Pines with their creeping roots.
The Cairngorms were a lovely challenge to paint. Am Monadh Ruadh, the red hills, were in fact constantly changing colour as the wind pushed blue and purple shadows across them, and the sun picked out golden highlights. It was good to work in acrylic, as the paint allows you to layer colours which is ideal for something like this. I hadn’t tried using acrylics outdoors before. You can tell how cold my hands were though!
