This oil painting shows two African King Colobus monkeys, at Blackpool Zoo. I was a member of the zoo when I was a student at Blackpool School of Art, and spent a great deal of time sketching there. This pair were sitting looking out the window of their enclosure, looking either wise or deeply melancholy. They were probably just contemplating their next meal. I have mixed feelings about animals in captivity, but several species have been saved from extinction by captive breeding.

Being so easy to blend, oil paint is fantastic for painting fur or feathers. I also love the richness and depth of the colours. This is one of my earlier oil paintings, from 2006. The painting is unframed and measures 30″ x 24″ (76 x 61cm).
