I found this photo of a beautiful Malian girl on Wikipedia and my Thursday night class and I drew her; we’ve been working on portraiture the last few weeks and are practising on photos before moving onto working from life after Christmas. I love the way that although we all drew the same person, the drawings all look different and have different expressions. I suppose this might be considered a bad thing but I find it quite fascinating. Its amazing how the slightest alteration in, for example, the shadows in the corner of the mouth or eyes can completely change the persons expression and appearance. Here’s my pastel drawing, then below, with three of my students drawings.
